Hygiene in General

Food and water: Implement the basic rules and basic food safety you know, do not ignore them, because inevitably at some point of the trip you may suffer the consequences that you know.

Reminder:

  • Drink only bottled drinks that have the stamp of safety.
  • Do not consume ice cubes (¡always avoid ice cubes!). Do not forget this advice while you are traveling in hot days, without fresh drinks, it may be a temptation. Avoid traveler's diarrhea. The ice cubes are among the most frequent causes.
  • Avoid raw food and uncooked meats, avoid salads and peeled fruit. Have you wondered how these dishes have being prepared?

Avoid without concessions:
Do not eat your food in the street (chiringuitos), because the lack of habit of your body and the sanitary insecurity you are exposing it could cause you damage to the rest of the trip.
Common sense is crucial. But, while days goes on the traveler is more confident, and a false concept of "integration with the local population” appears. Anybody is "immune to everything." If you are suffering "traveler's diarrhea" remember that it is little more than usual, try to carry with you toilet paper, so take it to your side in the same way as you never will abandon your camera.

Cleanning

Always take with you a reserve of toilet paper, because it is not always provided, especially in public toilets and remote sites.
Personally I recommend carrying several commercial wipes (which are impregnated of alcohol). You could wipe your hands when there is no running water or disinfect a small wound, these are some minimal precautions.

Preventives

If you have sex with unknown people use condoms. They will protect you against AIDS, and also against other sexually transmitted diseases.
